Abstract:
This thesis analyses the determinants for the sustainability of NGOs implemented projects in Bishoftu city, Dukam sub-city and phased out between 2015 up to 2020. The researcher was interested to select this title by observing many non-functional projects wearing NGO signboard. The objectives of the study were assessing the significant determinants for the project sustainability. Explanatory research design was followed. To achieve this objective, descriptive analysis and Regression analysis were conducted. The study was employed both primary and secondary data sources, where primary data was collected from sampled target beneficiaries using structured questionnaire whereas the secondary data was collected from project documents and different report paper sources. The target population was 7,032 beneficiaries addressed by NGO implemented that get phase out between (2015-2020) out of which 237 sample respondents were drawn based on stratified random sampling techniques . Descriptive analysis was used to describe the socio-economic and demographic characteristics of sample project beneficiaries. Key informant interview was done using one person from the implementer NGOs and one person from FECO, NGO directorate and two focal persons from respective sector. To draw conclusion about population under the study, different tests were undertaken for critical assumption of statistical analysis. The result of tests for assumptions between variables shows that the data is adequate to run regressions. From the result of the study, Socio-economic factors of NGOs implemented project beneficiaries, technical factors, Environmental factors, Institutional factors, and financial factors, throughout the whole project life are variables that determine sustainability of projects implemented by NGOs. The coefficient of determination, R2, is 0.647 (64.7.0%). This means 64.7% of the variation in the project sustainability is explained by these selected independent variables. Institutional factors are strongly significant determinants for the NGO implemented project sustainability. It can be recommended that more effective project sustainability results can be achieved through effort of institutions and user community by preparing and executing the sustainability strategies after the phaseout of the project intervention. Moreover, the finding of the study encourages government development sectors to endeavor design and in place of proper project implementation, design proper sustainability strategies, follow up its execution and ensure accountability system
