most common cause of disability. It is one of the major occupational health problems ranked the
highest in terms of years lived with disability. However there is a limitation of studies which
directs to improve the health and safety of beauty salon workers.
Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the magnitude and associated factors of work
related low back pain among female beauty salon workers in Bole sub/city, Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia, 2023
Method: A facility based cross-sectional study was conducted among female beauty salons who
was working in Bole sub/city Addis Ababa city with a sample of 344, from fifty three beauty
salons were selected by using simple random sampling. The analysis was done by multivariable
analysis using binary logistic regression to analyze the association of independent variables with
the dependent variable. Adjusted odds ratio with a 95% CI reported and p-value < 0.05 the
variables was used to show significant association.
Result: A total of 344 beauty salon workers participated, with a 100% response rate. The study
found that the self reported 12 month magnitude of work related low back pain was 225 (65.4%)
with 95%CI (60.1-70.4%). Workers who have greater than 5 years experiences [AOR= 8.3
95%CI (3.4-20)], Workers standing for 4-6 hours per day [AOR= 2.736 95%CI (1.29-5.79)],
Workers who gave service for >5 number of customer in day [AOR= 5.709 95%CI (2.95-
11.05)], Workers who did not have adjustable chair [AOR= 5.43 95%CI 1.58-18.65], workers on
bending and twisting in awkward way [AOR= 3.65; 95%CI 2-6.7].were factors that shows a
statically significant association with low back pain.
