Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to explore student‟s participation in English speaking skills lessons
at Ejere Secondary School. Specifically, the study was intended to assess students‟ participation,
examine whether the students‟ are exposed to a variety of participation in englishspeaking
lessons and find out the availability of special programs designed to enhance students‟
participation. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, a descriptive method was used and
the data were gathered through questionnaire, classroom observation,and interview . The
findings of the study revealed that teachers and students did not play their roles as stated by
modern methods, such as the communicative approach to language learning and teaching, group
discussion, debate, role play, organizes groups by mixing up top, middle and lower achievers.
The study further exposed that teachers‟ method of teaching, lack of backgrounds knowledge,
students‟ fear of making mistakes, andattitudinal problems, were the major factors that inhibit
students‟ participation. So it‟s advantageous to organize students‟ in small group, provide
maximum opportunity to students to speak the target language
