Abstract:
The main objective of this study was to compare the Teaching Practices Employed and Students‟
Achievement in English Speaking Class: Between some selected Private and Government
primary Schools of Addis Ababa in case of Lideta subcity. The researcher focused mainly on the
techniques and strategies used by the teachers, the resources used to teach speaking skills and the
classroom setting. To gather information on the above main objectives various instruments were
used. These were: students‟ questionnaire, classroom observation, teachers‟ interview. The data
were categorized and descriptively analyzed using qualitative and quantitative method. The
findings depicted that most of the time government school teachers made use of inappropriate
speaking techniques and procedures in the mentioned level. Teachers were observed using the
traditional way of teaching speaking which is dominated by reading model dialogues aloud. In
contrast the finding prevails that private school teachers were seen using better techniques and
strategies with ample language resources to help their students develop speaking skills. The
consequences of inappropriate speaking practices used at government schools, has resulted in the
weak performance of the students in speaking when compared with the private. To that end, this
research paper provides recommendations that could bring about a change in the practice of
teaching and learning speaking in the grade level studied. So that techniques and procedures,
appropriate language resources of teaching speaking could be employed
