The main objective of this study was to investigate the methods employed by grade 9 English
teachers to teach grammar. The study was focused on one government secondary school in West
Shoa Zone, Gindeberet Woreda, specifically Gindeberet High School. The study participants
were 82 grade 9 students and 8 teachers. The design of the study was descriptive. Both
qualitative and quantitative data types were used to achieve the objective of the study. The data
gathering instruments used were: questionnaire, classroom observation, interview and textbook
analysis. The findings of the study indicated explanation of grammar rule as the major methods
the teachers used to teach grammar. Another important finding of the study was grammar is to
be taught to help the learners pass examination. The finding of the study also indicated that
teachers are applying principle of grammar teaching technique focusing on giving
exemplification due to their personal philosophy, time constraint, lacks of teaching facilities, the
nature of national exam and so forth. The study was concluded by recommending the need for
teachers to employ certain principles of a balanced approach to the teaching of grammar. The
concerned bodies should provide the necessary supports and facilities for teachers |
