Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate factors hindering students’ reading comprehension at
Gorba Secondary School in Ejere Woreda, West Shoa Zone. To finalize this research, a
descriptive research was employed to achieve this research goal. The reference was grade 10
students. A total number of fifty (50) students were taken for the study and comprehensive sample
technique. The 54 items of questionnaire were designed to get relevant data from the students
and 10 items for class observation check list. The data collected through the questionnaire were
analyzed with descriptive statistics percentage and class observation check list also analyzed. All
the collected data were analyzed and discussed to get the final conclusions. The findings showed
that the students in the school had serious reading comprehension factors. Accordingly,
inadequate teaching and learning facilities, unable to guess the meaning of words in a context,
lack of interest and motivation in reading, inadequate library services, inadequate training in
reading skills, lack of ability using dictionary, and inadequate knowledge of English vocabulary
and grammar were the most factors hindering reading comprehension. The data gathered
indicates four sources of factors hindered students reading comprehension like teacher factors,
student’s factors, textbook factors and school environment factor
