Abstract:
Floriculture industry is a new agro industry activity in Holeta. The development of the industry has brought
significant change on the socio-economy of the surrounding community and assesses socioeconomic consequences
of the flower industry in Holeta town on and the surrounding community. However, the social and economic
implication of the sector was not studied, assessed, documented and given attention to. This study achieves objective
based on descriptive research and it answers questions like, „What were the social and economic problem
consequences of the flower industry?‟ „What was the safety qualification standard?‟ „How to assess the
socioeconomic of livelihood of the surrounding community?‟ This study focused on 15 farms, for a target
population of 360 by Stratified Sampling the data obtained from them. From my target population, I was able to
acquire a representative population, of a Sample Size of 190, from the surrounding community. And thesis contain
from all section statement of the problem, objective of the study ,limitation of the study, significance of the study,
scope of the study, conceptual frame work, finding, summary, conclusion and recommendation. The study depends
on both primary data like questioner, survey, interview, focus group discussion, and secondary data. Based on
information gathered from different sources, analyzed through descriptive statics using the of Likert scale, SPSS
software, checked by validity and reliability .The Study result shows that the sector creates more job opportunity for
unskilled labor, especially for women who are poor, illiterate and mostly marginalized from other job opportunities
and hence forced to live a low quality of life. In 15 of the sample farms taken in here in the study 69% of the
laborers were women, out of whom 49.5 % were illiterate and without any skill. The social implication
consequences of flower industry are as followed: workers health and occupational safety, problem women
encounter including sexual harassment, workers‟ rights, surrounding community health, compensation for previous
land holders .The economic implication consequences of flower industry are economic instability , low income,
unemployment rate, and food insecurity. The safety qualification standards are measured by FLP, MPS-SQ, and
EUROGAP
