Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to assess causes, Effects and practices of rural youth in
migration in Ambo District of West Shoa Zone .Both quantitative and qualitative
methodologies were used in this study. This study used descriptive research design and using
multi stage sampling technique, 1st
Ambo Woreda was selected purposely, 2nd its 33
Kebeles‟ were clustered into 2 groups then 108 respondents were selected by lottery method,
.Data was collected from questionnaire, key informant interview and FGD. Quantitative data
has been analyzed by descriptive statistics, using SPSS software (percentage and frequency)
presented in tables. Qualitative data were used to substantiate the responses of questionnaire
and narrated statements. Data analysis showed that, Poverty is a great cause, lack of job
opportunities , Lack of infrastructure, Political instability, the need of their owners personal
business, free from obligated by family, strain of farm work ,Environmental degradation. The
findings showed that various rural youth in migrated in the study area.
The negative effects that rural youth in migration were;- rural youth in migrated do not get
comfortable life, to change of wearing styles , loss of family ties and treatment, decreases in
human capital, dependency in the households, exposed to vulnerability to crime and
delinquency, suffered by beating, sexual harassment and use cheap labor force, exposed to
mental and physical harm. The main practice of rural youth in migrated were;- The main
Economic practices and the main physical practices.
The study conclude that different causes lead rural youth in migration to act migrating by
practicing traditional and more sophisticated strategies and it has significant negative impact
on rural youth migrants expectation and innovation.
Finally, the researcher would like to recommend that all causes those lead migrants to
migrated rural to urban, so the government developed and revise his strategies how migrants
minimize to migrated, and discuss the negative consequence of migration with environmental
society and youths by itself then it becomes attitudinal change on youths by selective kebeles
societies and minimize rural youth in migration in the study area
