Abstract:
Background:
Maternal near miss is a major public health problem in which the women are nearly died but survived from life threatening condition which occur both in developed and developing countries like Ethiopia. There is a paucity of evidence on the magnitude and factors associated with maternal near miss in the study Area.
Objective: This study aimed to assess magnitude of maternal near miss and associated factors among mothers admitted to Ambo University Referral Hospital, West Shewa zone, Oromia, Ethiopia, 2024.
Methods: Facility based cross-sectional study was conducted by using systematic sampling technique to select 345 mothers admitted to Ambo University Referral Hospital from 8 September- 30th October, 2024. Interviewer administered pretested questionnaire was used to collect data from the participants. Data were coded and entered into Epi-data version 4.6 and analysed using SPSS version 26 software. Descriptive findings were summarized using tables, means and graphs. Bivariate and Multivariate Logistic regression analysis was carried out to identify factors associated with maternal near miss. A p-value of less than 0.05 were used to declare statistical significance.
Results: A total of 325 mothers were included in the study making the response rate 94.3%. The magnitude of maternal near miss was 23.7%(95%CI=19.1-28.3). Marital status [(AOR) 95%CI=3.364 (1.395, 8.115)], birth interval [(AOR)95%CI=3.252(1.264,8.370)] and faced problem in the Hospital [(AOR)95%CI=2.496(1.413, 4.406)], age at first pregnancy[(AOR)95%CI=0.312(0.140,0.692) and non-spontaneous labor[(AOR)95%CI=0.387(0.173, 0.866)] were significantly associated with maternal near miss.
Conclusion: Magnitude of maternal near miss in the study area was high in relation to previously conducted studies. Marital status, birth interval and facing problems in hospital, Non-spontaneous labor and age at first pregnancy showed a significant association with maternal near miss.
So, in order to reduce maternal near miss, it’s important to improve service quality, empower and create awareness among women regarding their socio-demographic, create outreach services with nearby and capacitating and mentoring maternal health services
