Abstract:
Background - Non-traumatic acute abdomen is an urgent onset of abdominal disease requiring immediate surgical intervention which excludes trauma case, Many diseases, some of which are not surgical or even intra-abdominal, can produce acute abdominal pain and tenderness. Therefore, every attempt should be made to make a correct diagnosis so that the chosen therapy, often a laparoscopy or laparotomy, is appropriate.
Objective: – To assess treatment outcomes and its associated factors among surgically treated non traumatic acute abdomen patients at Ambo university referral hospital, West Shoa, Oromia, Ethiopia 2024.
Methods: Institution based cross-sectional study was conducted by reviewing patients’ medical records from the past four years, from August 30,2020 to September 30 2024 and a random sampling technique were used a total of 260 sample size. The questionnaire was developed as appropriate to address the objectives of the study. Source of population was acute abdomen patients who were surgically treated. The collected data Entered into EPI info software version 3.1 then exported to SPSS version 27, for analysis. Bi -variable and multi variable logistic regression analyses were conducted to measure association. AOR with 95% Confidence interval was calculated and P-value of ≤0.05 is used to declare statistical significance association between the independent and dependent variables.
Result: In this study, total of 260 respondents were enrolled but 246 participated making 94.6 response rate. Two hundred nine (80.4%) had favourable outcome. Fifty (19.2%) of operated patient had post-operative complication. of this wound infection were the commonest post-operative complications. death which make the overall case fatality rate 8(3.1%) in the study population. Age groups (19-29 and >50yrs), Duration of illness, and abdominal guarding were factors significantly associated with patients treatment outcome in our study.
Conclusion and Recommendation: The findings of this study showed that the magnitude of unfavourable treatment outcomes for non-traumatic acute abdomen was found to be high Complications and deaths were more in old age patients and those delayed presentation. To alleviate this problem, Attention and optimization before surgery should be given to high extreme of age patients because unfavourable treatment outcome is high in this age group
