In developing countries, students often face barriers to participate in athletics and physical education activities
in general, these may include complex issues like attitudes towards athletics event, traditional and religious
beliefs, and physical education systems.
This study intended to identify determinants influencing students’ participation in athletic events to selected
school’s in west shoa zone specifically in the Toke Kutaye district. The research focuses on Guder Secondary
School, Addis Tesfa Secondary School, and Goro Sole Secondary School. The primary objective is to identify
factors that hinder students' involvement in athletics, including socio-economic, cultural, environmental, and
individual aspects.
Data was collected using questionnaires. The findings indicate that availability of facilities, parental support,
peer influence, and school policy play significant roles in determining student participation. Challenges such as
inadequate sports infrastructure, cultural attitudes towards athletics, and academic pressures were also identified
as barriers to participation. Recommendations are provided to enhance the promotion of athletic events in
schools, with a focus on improving infrastructure, awareness, and institutional support for student involvement in
sports. |
