Abstract:
Background: According to WHO definition Hypertension is defined as persistently elevated arterial
blood pressure (BP), systolic BP (SBP) ≥ 140 mmHg and/or diastolic BP (DBP) ≥ 90 mmHg. Low-
income and middle income countries there has been progressive increase in number of adults with
hypertension, surpassing that of high income countries, with estimated 1.04 billion people living with
hypertension in low and middle income countries compared with 349 million people with high income
countries. In Ethiopia, there are multiple studies conducted on prevalence of hypertension and its
associated factors were explored in different civil servants include federal police, high school teachers,
banker.. But there are limitation studies that conducted on hospital work forces that showed the
magnitude hypertension and its associated factor among health work forces in Ethiopia
Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the magnitude of hypertension and its associated
factors among staffs of Ambo university referral hospitals, Ambo, Ethiopia.
Methods and material: An Institution based cross-sectional study was conducted. Stratified simple
random sampling technique was employed to select 274 of both from health worker and administrative
AURH staffs. Data were collected using structured questionnaire administered and check list through a
trained data collectors using face to face interview method. Data were entered into Epi-dataversion 4.7
and exported to SPSS Version 20 for further analysis. Descriptive statistics, bivariate analysis and
multivariable binary logistic regression were applied and statistically significance was declared at P-
value <0.05.
Result: The totals of 274 staff were responded resulting in response rate of 100% and their mean age
was (31±4.7SD) years. Magnitude of hypertension in this study was 6.6% (95%CI:3.6-
9.5).Age>35(AOR=8.51.;95%CI:2.134.61)andoverweight>=25kg/m2(AOR=6.15;96%CI:1.426.96)an
d moderate and above stress (AOR=4.45;95%CI:1.38-14.35)were associated with hypertension.
Conclusion: There is low Magnitude of hypertension among the study participants.BMI (overweight),
old age and those had moderate and above stress independently associated with hypertension
