Abstract:
Background:-Currently about 65 million reproductive age women are infected with
hepatitis B virus, and 9 out of 10 mothers with hepatitis B infection had mother to child
transmission. Vertical transmission accounts about 21% of HBV-related deaths
worldwide and 13%-26% continentally. There no study on magnitude of hepatitis B Sero
status and associated factors among pregnant women in Addis Ketema Sub City.
Objective:-This study aimed to determine the magnitude and associated factors of
hepatitis B sero-statusamong pregnant women on antenatal care at Health Centers of
Addis KetemaSubCity, Addis Ababa, 2023.
Methods: - A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted from August
September, 2023. A total of 274 pregnant women were enrolled in the study using a
systematic random sampling technique. Data were collected using a pretested interviewer
administered questionnaire. Blood sample was collected and serum tested onsite at each
health center. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 25. Bivariable and
multivariable logistic regression analysis were used. Strength of association was assessed
using adjusted odds ratio with 95% CI and p value <0.05 was used as statistically
significance.
Results: A total 274 pregnant women participated in the study with 98.9% of response
rates and mean age of 26.2(SD ±4.99). The magnitude of HBV infection was found to be
6.2% (95% CI: 0.87-9.42). Having multiple sexual partners [AOR = 11.31, 95% CI
(3.08–41.55), p<0.001], having sexually transmittedinfection[AOR = 8.02, 95% CI
(1.98–32.53),p0.004] and tattooing [AOR =5.69,95% CI (1.53–21.2), p<0.01] were
significant associated of hepatitis B virus infection.
Conclusion and recommendation: In this study, the sero-prevalence of HBV infection
was intermediate in magnitude according to WHO criteria. Having a history of multiple
sexual partners, tattooing and history of sexual transmission infection were significantly
associated with HBV infection. Therefore, health education and awareness creation on
mode of transmission of HBV are very crucial.
