Traditional Community Proverb Teaching And Learning Assessment: The Case Of Walmara District Of West Showa Zone Of Oromia

Abstract

The study's primary goal was to assess the practices of proverb teaching and learning in Walmera District of West Showa Zone of Oromia. Descriptive statistics research design including frequency and percent was employed. A sequential mixed of quantitative and qualitative research method approach was used. Simple random sampling technique was used randomly to choose education experts, culture and tourism experts, women and children personnel, school directors, Afan Oromo teachers by listing their names in alphabetical order, and randomly chosen by drawings lottery from a hat, while purposive sampling judgmental technique was employed to select community elders, education supervisors, and adult education facilitators from the chosen section. From 185 target population 126 (93 for questionnaire and 30 for interview questions) respondents were chosen as a sample of the study. Through surveys, interviews, and document analysis, data were gathered. 96.8% of the data were put to analyze by using SPSS version 26. Quantitative and qualitative data analyses were used to analyze the collected data. The frequency and percentage were used to analyze the quantitative data. To triangulate the quantitative analyzed data, narratives of qualitative data were also provided. As a result, the following primary study findings were attained: The community's elders and the community at large provided proverbial knowledge. Oral transmission of traditional knowledge is the most common method of proverb practices. The community's usage of proverbs in their daily activities was significantly low. In assessing the perception towards proverb as a body of knowledge the respondents were agreed that it was a body of knowledge. The frequency of community usage of the proverb was meaningfully low. The benefit of reflecting life philosophies, experiences, and moral standards of the proverb teaching and learning practices was significantly low. The inclusion of proverbial material in the Afan Oromoo curriculum to assess how the students practices of proverb was assessed. As a result, the content of the proverbs was knowingly low in terms of educating students about their culture. At the very least, potential barriers to the community are learning and applications of proverbs were assessed. The first perceived factor was the case of globalization and its negative impact on local proverb usage were rated as having a significant impact. Also, the family role was cited as having a significant both positive and negative impact on proverbial teaching and learning. Additionally, the community's proverbial teaching and learning practices are moderately impacted by the attitude of the younger generation due to lack of attention. Similar to this, spending a lot of time on social media was determined to have a moderately negative impact. Similarly, respondents indicated that the absence of written documentation was one of the factors that moderately affected the community's proverbial practices of teaching and learning. The data was revealed that lack of cultural practice among young generation has a significant impact on practices. Urbanization has had a major impact on teaching and learning of proverb in terms of leads to homogenization. At the end, possible recommendations are forwarded to fill the gap. Families, community elders, and young generation should practice proverb teaching and learning through wise sayings in daily activities, conflict resolution, and social gatherings, to improve community benefit from teaching and learning practice of proverbs through efforts, the concerned bodies’ suggested using proverbs and proverbial expressions with the community, education experts suggested evaluating the content of the proverb in the Afan Oromoo curriculum to improve young generation practices of proverb, and finally recording community proverbs and proverbial expressions from elderly elders in the community and storing the material electronically would prevent the loss of the proverb and its expressions of the community.
