Assessing, Knowledge, Challenges And Practices Of Biogas Technology Among Rural Households Of Nono District, Residents Western, Oromia Ethiopia

Abstract

Energy is a fundamental requirement for human being‟s comfort and basic needs of everyday life. It makes a significant contribution to every facet of human wellbeing, including food preparation, lighting, heat, and sanitation, as well as employment and health care. The study was conduct to assess the knowledge, challenges and practices of biogas technology in rural households. It involved 204 sample household heads constituting 41 biogas adopters and 163 non-adopters. They were selected using simple random and purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected mainly using semi-structured interview, questionnaires, field observation and focus group discussions. The generated data was analysed by graph inferential statistics and Binary logistic regression model To analyse factors affecting the adoption of biogas technology among households. The finding of the study identified that demographic characteristics (such as age, house hold size, and livestock size) had profound effect on adoption and utilization of biogas technology while educational standards and marital status of households had no effect on adoption of biogas technology. The knowledge of utilization of biogas technology was significantly observed among adopters (3.7±0.13). _Biogas solved problems of fuel wood for cooking(3.75±0.18) among adopters (3.58±0.23). _Other source of energy instead of biogas was 3.68±1.3 and 3.74±0.1 for adopters and non-adopters, respectively. The financial source of the household heads was 3.53±1.12 for adopters and 3.63±0.3 non adopters. _Perceptions of the high cost of digester construction materials were high among adopters (3.52±1.34) and non-adopters (3.74± 0.1. concerning lack of attitude, the average mean value 3.56±0.7 for adopters and average mean 3.76±0.4 of non- adopters at p<0.05% were identified as challenges for adoption of biogas technology. The households had positive attitude towards biogas technology but the involvement of both governmental and non-governmental organizations had shown low participation. From the point of this study, it is recommended that the District Energy Agency XV Office need to provide Do they have Enough fund for both project developers and targeted populations for sustainability of biogas technology.
