dc.description.abstract Fishing is an important source of subsistence and income and thus significantly contributes to livelihood security for a large number of people.This research was conducted to identify fish production, socio-economic contribution and determinant factors in Jaldu District. The target population of this study consisted of 5kebeles which two kebeles are relay on aquaculture and three kebeles are on fish cupture. Cross-sectional based discriptive research design that enage the qualitative and quantitative data collection approach from the randomly selected 1242 households were used. Quantitative data were collected using open and close ended questionnaires, whereas the qualitative data were collected using focuse group discussions and direct observation. The quantitative data were analyzed using frequency, percentages, mean, standard deviation by using SPSS version 26.00. Overall, only 31.45% of surveyed households were involved in fish production, of which only 17.74% of households involving in earthen pond based aquaculture. The mean amount of fish produced per week per person 1.19 ±0.52 kg with a mean total amount 33.38±0.53 annual production. The mean per capita consumption of fish was 0.05 kg/ day. About 82% of respondents in the study area do not eat fish every day due to lack of experience. Tilapia is the most preferred fish by many farmers (59%). The mean per capita income from the fish was 720 ETB. Generally, the majority of the respondents (58.90%) had positive attitude towards fish production. However, due to lack of support the fish production for socio-economic purpose in the study district is very poor. Therefore, effective and coordinated effort is very imperative to boost the contribution in the livelihood of the community. en_US
