Abstract:
Background: - Inadiquate solid waste recycling practice of both domestic and industrial solid
waste were the gap identified for this study. The study will have different significances that it
can provide some guide line and information to different sector on about solid waste recycling
and its contribution to circular economy
Objective: - To assess the maginitude of solid waste recycling practice and its associated factors
among industries located in Burayu area of Shager City administration, Oromia, Ethiopia, 2023.
Methods: - Institutional based cross-sectional study design was employed and Simple random
sampling method were used to select study participants from sampling frame by using table of
random numbers. Structured questionnaires developed from different literature and used to
collect data. The data were cleaned, coded, entered EpiData (Ver.4.6.0.4), and analyzed by using
SPSS (Ver.20) computer based statistical package foe Social Science. Both Descriptive and
analytical statistics were done and displayed by using text, frequencies tables, and figures.
Binary logistic regression model was used for inferential statistics or to see the association
between dependent and independent variables P-values of <0.25 were used on bi-variable
logistic regression analysis to select the candidate variables for the final model. Odds ratio with
95% confidence intervals were computed to see the strength of associations. Finally, p value<0.05 on multivariable logistic regression analysis were used as cut off point to declare
statistically significant variables.
Result: - Present study revealed that 31 (17%) of industries were recycled solid waste and 61
(34.1%) of participants collect and store their Solid Waste separately at temporary onsite storage.
Furthermore, 60 (33.5%) of participants had waste recycling plan; 124 (69.3%) of them lack
finance for recycling and 147 (82.1%) had challenge of access to recyclable solid waste material.
The variables: - allocated finance for solid waste recycling with adjusted odd ratio [AOR: 0.035;
(95% CI: 0.004 - 0.277)]; storing solid waste separately with adjusted odd ratio [AOR: 0.093;
(95% CI: 0.019 - 0.463)]; Waste pickers “Qoraliyo” to collect solid waste with adjusted odd ratio
[AOR: 0.086; 95% CI: 0.019 - 0.401)]; financial challenge to recycle solid waste with adjusted
odd ratio [AOR: 0.057; (95% CI: 0.007 – 0.487)]; accessing waste pickers with adjusted odd
ratio [AOR: 0.033; (95% CI: 0.002 - 0.517)]; using any solid waste source reduction methodes
with adjusted odd ratio [AOR: 0.017; (95% CI: 0.001 – 0.286)] respectivily had association with
dependent variable solid waste recycling practice. Conclusion: - Currently low magnitude of
industries recycling solid waste were identified in Burayu area of Sheger city adiminstration,
Oromia, Ethiopia with influencing fuctors like; finance, storing SW separately, Waste pickers,
challenge and waste source reduction are independent factors associated with solid waste
recycling industry.
