Abstract:
This study assessed the practices and challenges of instructional supervision in secondary schools of
Meta Robi Woreda West Shoa Zone.Target population of the study was 2 principals,3 vice principals,4
unit leaders,3 supervisors and 97 secondary school teachers totally 109.From the total population 2
principals,3 vice principals,4 unit leaders,3 supervisors and 74 teachers totally 86 respondents were
participated in giving responses. Descriptive survey method was used in order to gather large variety of
data related to the practices and challenges of instructional supervision in secondary schools. The target
population was teachers,principals,vice principals and Woreda Education Bureau supervisors. The
researcher employed sampling techniques such as purposive, available and sample random
samplingtechniquetoselectsamples.Questionnaires, interviews, focus group discussion, document analysis
and observation were used as data collecting instruments. The collected data were analyzed through both
qualitatively and quantitatively. The findings show that the practices and challenges of instructional
supervision was lack of giving training for beginner teachers and an experienced teachers, the less
acceptance of instructional supervisors by teachers, the less qualification and knowledge of supervisors,
lack of experience sharing, between teachers in the school and out of the school and. was recommended
that the instructional supervisor should plan to make experience sharing, to give training, to motivate
teachers in order to facilitate teaching learning activities. Besides, trained, qualified and knowledgeable
supervisors should be assigned to facilitate the work of instructional supervision.
