Abstract:
The study was conducted to assess Practice and challenges of school leaders in creating positive
school culture in secondary schools of Ambo woreda of west shoa zone. In order to achieve the
objective of the study, mixed research design was adopted. All (57) schools teachers, principals
and supervisors used census sampling technique. Both primary and secondary data were
collected via questionnaire and interview. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive
methods. Findings of the study discovered that Woreda education office support, inadequate
financial support, uninspiring environment for teachers and students, extreme interventions of
external bodies and lack of conducive school physical environment were identified as the
external factors that deter the practices of creating positive school culture. In this manner, the
school leaders and other concerned bodies accountable to propose the way by which these
factors were curtailed. The result of the study unveiled that absence of providing adequate
induction programs, shortage of rewards and incentives were among the school related factors
that hamper the practices of creating school culture. Hence, school leaders responsible to
provide induction training for new entrants, and it is better if the employees were rewarded as
per their deeds.
