Abstract:
Background:
Common mental disorder is the most frequent psychiatric disorders among people with epilepsy and has
a substantial impact on seizure control and negatively affects the treatment outcomes. Most of the
studies done so far have focused mainly on a specific mental disorder like depression. However, to the
best of my‟ knowledge, there has been no study done in the study area focusing on the magnitude of
common mental disorders and associated factors among epileptic patients.
Objective: To assess the magnitude and factors associated with common mental disorder in epilepsy
patients who attended in west shewa zone public hospitals Oromia, Ethiopia, 2023
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in West Shewa zone public hospitals from January
to March 2023, involving 383 epileptic patients. The study assessed common mental disorder using the
Self-Reporting Questionnaire-20 (SRQ-20). A systematic random sampling technique was applied and
the collected data were entered into Epi-Data version 4.6.6 and analyzed using SPSS version 21. A
binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify factors associated with common mental
disorders. Variables with p-values less than 0.25 were considered for the multivariate model, with p values less than 0.05 indicating statistically significant associations in the final model.
Results: A total of 383 participants were included in the study with a response rate of 100%. About
52.2% with 95% CI(47.19_57.24)study participants had common mental disorder. Multivariable
analysis showed that Poor social supports (AOR= 7.734, [95% CI: 3.514, 17.023]), Family history of
mental disorder (AOR=1.959, [95% CI: 1.217, 3.404]) and history of relapse (AOR=3.235, [95% CI:
1.198, 8.700]) were significantly associated with common mental disorder.
Conclusions: The findings of this study revealed that common mental disorder among epileptic patient
was relatively high. And also having poor social support,Family history of mental disorder and History of relapse
were factors significantly associated with common mental disorder. Therefore; it is recommended that great
attention should be given to common mental disorder besides controlling seizure attacks.
