Abstract:
Background: Sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia, faces demographic and reproductive
health concerns due to high fertility rates, population growth, and unmet demand for family
planning especially Long acting method. Lack of discussion with sexual partner, misconceptions, and inadequate counseling are some of the barriers to provide long acting
reversible contraceptive. Objective: To assess the magnitude of long-acting reversible contraceptive utilization and
associated factors among female health care providers working in Southwest Shoa
Zone ,Oromia,Ethiopia 2023. Method:Facility-based cross-sectional quantitative study design supplemented with
qualitative method was conducted on 347 female health care providers in southwest Shewa
Zone from February 1-30 /2023. Data was collected by using a structured questionnaire and
entered into EpI Info Version 7.2.3.1 were checked for completeness and coded, cleaned, and
exported to SPSS version 20.0 for analysis.Binary Logistic regression was carried out to
identify independently associated factors of long acting reversible contraceptive
utilization. Finally, in the multi variable binary logistic regression analysis, adjusted odds ratio
(AOR) with 95% CI and p-values less than 0.05 were used to identify significant
variables. The results were presented using text, table and chart. Results:A total of 347 participants in a response rate of 100%.The utilization of long acting
reversible contraceptives methods among female health care providers was 32.3%(95%
CI:27.1,37.5). Given birth (AOR= 4.26; 95% CI: 2.29, 7.89), desire to have children (AOR =
2.64; 95% CI: 1.22, 5.71), desire to have 0-2 children (AOR = 5.48; 95% CI: 3.09, 9.72), having partners/friends supportive to use long acting methods (AOR = 3.12; 95% CI: 1.15, 8.46) and previous used modern contraceptive methods (AOR = 2.43; 95% CI: 1.30, 4.53)
were significantly associated with utilization of long acting reversible contraceptives methods. Conclusion : This study revealed that utilization of Long Acting reversible contraceptives
among female health care providers was low. History of given birth, desire to have child, desire number of children, partners support & previous modern contraceptive used were
significantly associated with utilization of long acting reversible contraceptives
methods. Therefore, encouraging partner discussion targeted Information Education
Communication Intervention should be intensified to improve long-acting contraceptive
methods utilization
