Introduction: Tuberculosis is a communicable disease and top cause of death from single
infectious agent. More than 19000 people died in Ethiopia in 2021 because of tuberculosis.
Ethiopia is among 30 high TB burden countries. The main gaps seen are; Ethiopia is among 4
countries in which tuberculosis treatment outcome is not well evaluated and no study done in
Ambo town. So evaluating tuberculosis treatment outcomes and associated factors will help to
achieve national plan and helps to fill this gaps.
Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the magnitude of treatment outcome of
drug susceptible tuberculosis patients and its associated factors in Public Health Facilities of
Ambo town West Shoa Zone, Ethiopia, 2024
Method: A retrospective study was conducted at Ambo University Referral Hospital and Ambo
Health Centre on patients treated for Drug Susceptible tuberculosis from September 2016 to
August 2022 by reviewing TB registration book. Data of 363 DS-TB patients who were selected
by simple random technique collected with check list prepared and entered to SPSS.
Subsequently Descriptive analysis; Distribution,Central tendency and Variability or dispersion
and Binary Logistic regression was done to. P values less than 0.2 during Bivariable logistic
regression were candidate for final model and P value less 0.05 during final model was cut point
to declare level of significant
Results Overall three hundred twenty four (89.3%) DS-TB patients had successful treatment
outcome. From this 72(19.8%) were cured and 252 (69.4%) had completed their treatment. The
remaining 39(10.7%) had unsuccessful treatment outcome with 0.8% failure, 2.5% lost follow
up and 7.4% were died. Patients older than 55years (AOR=0.169, 95% CI: 0.052-0.554) and
AFB negative at 6 month (AOR=6.229, 95%CI: 1.847-21.005) were predictors of treatment
outcome of drug susceptible tuberculosis.
Conclusion and Recommendation: The magnitude of successful treatment outcomes in this
study is 89.3% (95%, 84.1-94.5) and in line with that recommended by WHO END TB
STRATEGIES (≥90%).AFB negativity at 6 month and age above 55years were predictors of
treatment outcome of drug susceptible tuberculosis. So older patients needs strict follow-up and
