The urban green spaces consist of vegetation in all urban parks, residential recreation areas and
other any trees and shrubs planted within demarked cities. Urban Green Infrastructure is an
evolving concept to provide a biotic and cultural function with sustainability. Therefore, this
study was conducted in Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, Lideta sub city, with the objective to investigate
the accessibility and status of urban green spaces management, identify factors affecting the
accessibility and status of urban green spaces management and challenges of urban green
spaces. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative research approaches. Data were
obtained from 192 respondent’s selected using simple random sampling. To undertake this
research data was collected through key informant interview, focus group discussion, and
interview and field observation. Descriptive statistics and Binary Logistic Regressions (BLR)
Models were used for data analysis. The findings of the study revealed that the status of green
spaces in the study area was moderate, while their accessibility was insufficient. the Results of
binary logistic regressions model revealed that age of respondents, budget allocated by
administration, sufficient green area, accessibility of green space area, population density and
average income were the major determinates and statically significant at p=0.01 and 0.05 level.
The challenges in green spaces management are weak communication, increase in population
and urbanization and lack of proper planning are among listed by the key informants. Finally,
this study strongly emphasizes the need for city administrations to prioritize the enhancement of
sustainability in urban environments. To fully comprehend the significance of these findings,
future research should focus on assessing, monitoring, and evaluating the progress and
accessibility of urban green spaces infrastructure. Furthermore, equipping city officials with a
comprehensive understanding of urbanization and the importance of creating environmentally
suitable communities should be a key priority. |
