Background: Standard precautions are basic level of infection control precautions in the care of
all patients to reduce the risk of transmission of blood-borne and other pathogens from both
recognized and unrecognized sources. In Ethiopia, there has been a dramatic increase in the
development of health facilities, but the emphasis given to preventing occupational exposures
has been inadequate despite its high prevalence.
Objectives: To asses practice towards standard precaution and associated factors among health
care providers at Saint Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia,
2023.
Methods: An institution based cross-sectional study was conducted at Saint Paul Hospital
Millennium Medical College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia with sample size of 406. Simple random
sampling method was used to select study participants and self administered interview was used
to collect the data. Data were entered into epi info and exported into SPSS version 25 for
analysis. Binary logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with practice of
standard precautions. Variables with P-value less than 0.25 was fitted into multiple logistic
regression and finally the variables which had independent association with practice of standard
precautions was identified on the basis of adjusted odds ratio (AOR), with 95% CI and p-value
less than 0.05.
Results: Three hundred ninety-six study participants were included in this study with a response
rate of 98%. The mean (±SD) age of the study participants was30.07 (± 4.96)years. More than
half of the study participants, 233 (58.8%) were in age between 26 and 30 years. The finding of
this study showed that more than half of the health care workers had good practice. Sex (AOR
=1.72; 95% CI: 1.32, 4.47), training on standard precautions (AOR = 2.18; 95% CI: 1.29, 3.66)
and monitoring and evaluation on standard precautions (AOR = 5.5; 95% CI: 3.28, 9.28) were
significantly associated with practice of health care workers towards standard precaution.
Conclusion and recommendation: Sex, monitoring and evaluation on standard precautions, and
training on standard precautions were significantly associated with practice of health care
workers to wards standard precaution. Administrative bodies of the hospital need to provide in service training for all health care workers and implement consistent and strong monitoring and
evaluation on standard precaution. Background: Standard precautions are basic level of infection control precautions in the care of
