Abstract:
Eucalyptus (Bahirzaf) is most commonly exotic tree naturally found in Australia and commonly
planted in Ethiopia. This study aims to evaluate the impact of Eucalyptus globulus on various
soil physical properties such as soil texture, bulk density, porosity, and water holding capacity.
Additionally, the study assessed the influence of Eucalyptus globulus on soil fertility indicators
including nutrient availability, organic matter content, pH levels, and microbial activity.
Through field observation and laboratory analysis, various soil parameters were assessed. An
explanatory quantitative case study and single case study research design was utilized.
Purposive sampling technique was used to select respondents for data collection out of 1596
population. Primary and secondary data were used in this study and the primary data were
collected from farmers of the study area through questionnaire, interview and physical
observation and secondary data from agricultural office. Interview was conducted with officials
and experts and questionnaires were filled by farmers of the study area and secondary data were
used. The positive result suggests that Eucalyptus plantations have a beneficial effect on soil
properties. The findings indicate that these plantations improved soil organic matter content.
Additionally, they enhance water retention capacity, which is crucial for sustainable agricultural
practices. These positive outcomes provide evidence-based recommendations for the
establishment and management of Eucalyptus plantations in the study area, promoting their
potential as a sustainable land use option. However, the negative result highlights the potential
drawbacks of Eucalyptus plantations on soil properties. The study reveals that these plantations
can lead to soil compaction, increased acidity, reduced nutrient availability, and decreased
biodiversity. These findings call for caution in the establishment and management of Eucalyptus
plantations in the study area, emphasizing the need for appropriate mitigation measures to
minimize their adverse impacts , for example implementing appropriate management methods.
Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the effects of Eucalyptus plantations on soil
physical and chemical properties. The results contribute to a better understanding of the
potential benefits and drawbacks of these plantations, enabling informed decision-making for
sustainable land management practices in the study area.
