Immediate Post-Partum Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptive Utilization And Associated Factors Among Mothers Who Gave Birth At Public Health Facilities In Addis Ketema Subcity, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2023

Abstract

Background: Immediate Postpartum family planning is an effective strategy for reducing maternal and childhood morbidity and mortality by preventing unintended pregnancy and short inter pregnancy intervals. Uptake of IPPLARCs remains low in Addis Ababa. However, little is known about Magnitude of IPPLARCs utilization and factors enhance its utilization. Objective: To determine magnitude of immediate postpartum long acting and reversible Contraceptive utilization and associated factors among mothers who gave birth at Public Health Facilities in Addis Ketema Sub city, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 1, June to 12, July, 2023. Methods: A facility based cross-sectional study design was conducted from 1, June to 12, July, 2023 at public Health Facilities in Addis Ketema Sub-city among 411 immediate post- partum mothers. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select the study participants. Pre-tested and interviewer administered structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Descriptive statistics were performed to inspect outliers and missing values. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regressions were performed using SPSS version 25 for analysis. Model fitness was tested by Hosmer and Lemeshow. An adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with a 95% CI was calculated to identify the strength and presence of an association. A P-value of < 0.05 was considered to declare statistical significance. Results: The magnitude of immediate Postpartum long-acting reversible contraceptive utilization was 27.3% (95% CI: 23.2-31.4). Discussion with partner about IPPLARC (AOR= 2.737; 95% CI: 1.195- 6.270), partner support (AOR= 9.975; 95% CI: 3.618-27.503), good knowledge of IPPLARC (AOR = 2.360, 95% CI: 1.238- 4.496) and favorable attitude towards IPPLARC (AOR = 3.91, 95% CI: 2.04 - 7.47) were significantly associated with immediate postpartum long-acting reversible contraceptive utilization. Conclusion: According to this study finding nearly a quarter of postpartum women used immediate postpartum long-acting reversible contraceptive. Discussion with partner, partner support, good knowledge and favorable attitude were factors associated with immediate postpartum long-acting reversible utilization.
