Abstract:
Background: Non-pneumatic anti-shock garment is one of life-saving first-aid kit for mothers encountering obstetric hemorrhage. The Non-pneumatic anti-shock garment is useful in reducing bleeding and regulating shock as Post-partum hemorrhage is the most common cause of maternal death and monthly reported in area of study.
Objective: To assess the utilization of non-pneumatic anti-shock garments for the management of postpartum hemorrhage and associated factors among Obstetric Care Providers working in public health facilities of North Shoa Zone, Oromia, Ethiopia, from March 10/2023 to May 20/2023. Methods: A health facility-based cross-sectional study was carried out among 422 Obstetric care providers of North Shoa, Oromia, Ethiopia. A simple random sampling method was used to select study participants who were working in obstetric departments of the study area. All Hospitals and 30% of health centers, which were selected by simple random sampling method, were included in the study. Data were collected through a face-to-face interviewer using a structured questionnaire, by electronic data collection tool (ODK), and analyzed by SPSS software version 25. Descriptive statistics were used to measure strength of association with appropriate AOR and interpreted at 95% CI. Bi-variable analysis was done and then the variables with P<0.2 were chosen for multivariable and then multivariable logistic regression was done to identify factors associated with non-pneumatic anti-shock garment utilization.
Results: - A total of 420 Obstetric care providers participated, with a response rate of 99.5%. About 36.0% (95%CI: 31.3% - 40.7%) of the Obstetric care providers were utilizing NASG for the management of Postpartum hemorrhage complications. Obstetric care providers working at hospitals [AOR= 6.061, 95% CI = 3.091-11.886], Availability of protocols in the Health Care [AOR=5.242, 95%CI= 2.652-10.361], placement of Non pneumatic anti-shock garment in store after use [AOR = 0.364, 95% CI= 0.131-0.912] & not knowing where garment is placed [AOR = 0.167, 95% CI = 0.061-0.460], and being trained on the use of garment AOR= 4.719 ( 95%CI = 2.460-9.050), were significantly associated with obstetric care provider’s utilization status of Non pneumatic Anti-shock Garment.
Conclusion and Recommendation: - In this study only 36% of the providers use NASG for the management of PPH complications which was very low utilization status. The types of facility, training, NASG protocol presence, not knowing where NASG is placed and NASG put in store after use were significantly associated with utilization of NASG. Strategies and program initiatives should focus on strengthening in-service and continuous professional development training, there by filling the knowledge and attitude gap among obstetric care providers.
