Abstract:
The utilization of Recycling materials in the construction industry is increasing worldwide. The influence of
different types of filler materials on the mechanical properties of asphalt concrete mixture varies with its
particle size, shape, surface area, surface texture, and other physio-chemical properties. One of the main
problems in asphalt paving mixtures is obtaining a sufficient amount of filler materials. In addition to this,
there is an environmental deterioration during the production of filler materials and a cost overrun of filler
materials, due to this problem this investigation mainly utilization of waste recycling brick powder as filler
materials in hot mix asphalt (HMA) production. The main objective of this study is to investigate the
Performance Evaluation of Hot-mix Asphalt Mixture Using Recycle Brick powder (RBP) as Filler with
Super pave Mix design method. For this research, Non-Probability sampling technique was adopted to
collect samples. The engineering properties of materials used for the component of HMA such as (Bitumen
80/100 penetration grad, Aggregates, Recycle Brick powder, and crushed Stone dust) are investigated based
on standard specifications. Based on this, the effect of Recycle Brick powder as a filler material on Marshal
Properties, Striping test, moisture susceptibility, and permanent deformation in asphalt mixtures was
investigated in detail. The chemical composition of Recycle Brick powder shows that the entire content of
Silicon Dioxide (SiO2),Aluminum Oxide (Al2O3), and Iron Oxide (Fe2O3) was 62.68%, 14.74 %, and 9.16%
respectively, satisfying a minimum requirement of Natural Pozzolan materials. The physical properties of
Recycle Brick powder were conducted on specific gravity and Plastic Index was 2.66 and non-plastic
respectively. Hot Mix Asphalt specimens were prepared from three different Superpave gradations with
conventional filler Crushed Stone Dust (CSD) of different proportions (4.0, 5.0, and 6.0 %) and eight
different bitumen content (3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5, 5.5, 6.0 and 6.5 %). Based on Ethiopian Road Authority
pavement design manual 5.0 % of CSD was selected as the control mix based in this study. The
conventional filler was replaced by Recycle Brick powder at different replacement rates(1%+4%, 2%+3%,
3%+2%, 4%+1%, 5% +0%,RBP and CSD respectively) on the basis of a control mix with 5 % CSD
and5.45% Optimum Bitumen Content (OBC).Therefore, the replacement rates of 3%RBP+2%CSD
convince ERA standard specification of marshal properties, it’s more economical and low permanent
deformation (2.88 mm) and with high tensile strength ratio (94.39%) were observed. The outcomes of the
experiments indicated that the use of Recycle Brick powder on HMA has fulfilled the criteria specified on
the specification as a filler with Superpave aggregate gradation up to 3%RBP+2%CSD replacement of
conventional filler in HMA production.
