Assessment o Quality of Formworks and Props of 10/60 Housing Projects in Addis Ababa

Abstract

Ethiopia has been implementing an ambitious government-led low and middle income housing programs. The programs are launched by Addis Ababa city administration. The program of 10/90 & 20/80 led by Addis Ababa city administration condominium housing projects office, it was started in 2004/2005 and 40/60 programs led by Addis Ababa city administration 40/60 saving houses development enterprise, it was Started in 2013/14. The 40/60 saving houses project there are constructed in different 16 locations (sites) in Addis Ababa with eight typologies there are Senga Tera, Crown, Asko , Ehil Nigid, Hintsa Akrabi, Bole Bulbula-1, Bole Bulbula-2, Tourist Nigid, Meri , Bole Ayat -1, Bole Beshale , Semit , Bole Ayat -2 , Kolfe Keranio and legehar . The Objective of this study is Assessment on Quality of Formwork and Props of 40/60 Housing Projects in Addis Ababa and also the methodology of this research which were apply to achieve the objectives by visiting selected construction projects. The Objective of this study is assessment on quality of formwork and props of 40/60 housing project, the reason I stand to do this research the failure of slab bridge around Kotebe Mesalemia during concrete casting time catastrophic failure of formwork and props so to suggest good quality of formwork and props based on duration, cost and quality for the contractors and engineers. And also identify the key problems /defects/ of formwork construction. The methodology of this research which were applied to achieve the objectives by visiting selected construction projects and gathering the necessary data from Questionnaire to selected grade one to grade three contractors, client representative Engineers and consultant Engineer’s that involved in the construction sites. The findings of this study shown that, conventional formworks 52% of the respondents use timber formwork and wooden props based on price assessment and by putting in to consideration the respective low prices, 36 % of the respondents use steel formwork & props by putting in to consideration of quality materials and the rest 12 % of respondents use both timber and steel formwork in to consideration of availability of the materials near to the site. The quality of formwork materials which is supplied by the contractors is not uniform with in projects of equivalent scope, even if they have the same specification because some contractors supply aged or over used formwork materials, some contractor’s don’t supply good quality of formwork materials and the consultants have not put the detail specification to the level of quality, types & standards of formwork materials and there is no close supervision at the construction sites .Finally recommended better practices to improve the quality of formwork and props construction practices.
