Abstract:
Background: Motorcycle accidents are a major global concern due to its risk. In Ethiopia
there are 123 motorcycle accidents per 100,000 people. Driving without controlling speed
and without helmet are the main factors of motorcycle accident. Low enforcement of road
traffic implementation was main factor of motorcycle accident. Identifying prevalence of
motorcycle accident and associated factors plays a vital role to reduce motorcycle accidents.
Objective: The aim of this study was to assess prevalence of motorcycle accident and
associated factors among motorcyclists in South West Shoa Zone, Oromia, Ethiopia, 2022
Methods: A community based cross-sectional study design was conducted from October 01
to 30, 2022 among 405 motorcycle drivers in South West Shoa Zone. Simple random
sampling technique was used. Data were collected using interviewer administered
questionnaire. Training was given for data collectors and supervisor, pretest was conducted
and data were checked for completeness and consistency. Frequency, mean and median was
used to summarize data. In bi-variable analysis p-value less than 0.25 was used to select
candidate variables for multi-variable analysis. In multi-variable logistic regression Adjusted
Odds Ratios (AOR) and its 95% confidence intervals (CIs); p-value of less than 0.05 was
used to identify statistically significant factors of motorcycle accident
Results: A total of 384 motorcyclists participated in the study which gave 95% response rate.
The prevalence of motorcycle accident among motorcyclists was 40.6% (95% CI: 35.7 to
45.8%). Failure to control speed (AOR =2.17, 95%CI (1.30-3.62), driving without wearing
helmet (AOR =1.96, 95%CI (1.71-5.14), driving without license (AOR =2.23, 95%CI (1.27-
3.91) and having driving experience <5 years (AOR =3.86,95%CI (1.79-8.33) had
statistically significant association with motorcycle accident
Conclusions: This study found that prevalence of motorcycle accident was high. Failure to
control speed, driving without wearing helmet, having driving experience <5 years and
driving without license were factors associated with motorcycle accident. Strengthening
transportation law enforcement will play an immense role in reducing accidents.
