Abstract:
Background: - One of the most crucial moments in a child's life is birth registration, which
is the official recording of a child's birth by a government institution. Review of documents
and administrative report of Woliso Town Civil Registration Office shows that birth
registration of children under the age of one year was low. Although this low birth
registration is a symptom and a cause of underdevelopment, there is inadequate information
on determinants of birth registration among women and child care givers in the study area.
Hence; the aim of this study is to fill the aforementioned gap.
Objective: -To identify determinants of birth registration among children born in the last
twelve months in Woliso Town, Oromia, Ethiopia, 2022.
Methods: - community based unmatched case-control study design was conducted in
Woliso Town, from August 1, 2022 to September 30, 2022. A total of 386 study participants
(128 cases and 258 controls) were included in the study. The study population for this study
was all children born and listed in family folders in the last twelve months in Woliso Town.
The study participants for cases were selected from kebeles civil registration providing
offices registration book of birth registration by using simple random sampling method and
the study participants for controls were birth occurred but did not till birth registered.
Data analysis was done using logistic regression model. An adjusted odds ratio with 95%
confidence intervals (CI) was computed to identify the presence and strength of association.
Finally, statistically significant variables were declared at p-value < 0.05 along with 95% CI.
Results: Being fully vaccinated (AOR=3.03, 95% CI: 1.35, 6.79), Number of visits to birth
registration offices by parents; Single visit (AOR= 3.16, 95%CI: 1.41, 7.11), Service
Satisfaction; said good (AOR=13.62, 95%CI: 6.69,18.42) and legalize birth certificate for
school enrollment; agreed (AOR=59.29,95% CI:12.68,25.92) were variables that were
significantly associated with birth registration.
Woliso Town Civil Registry and Health Offices can improve birth registration by integrating
with health services, like vaccination and legalizing birth certificate for school enrollment.
