Abstract:
The environmental problems of land degradation are numerous including massive soil losses, the decline in water quality, biodiversity deterioration and deprivation of ecosystem services and corresponding values for the present and future generations.The general objective of the study was to assess the determinants of farming households’ decision in implementing sustainable land management practices.The specific objective of this study were to assess farming households’ awareness level about sustainable land management practices, examine the different Land management practices adopted by the farming households and to investigate factors influencing farming households decision of implementing sustainable land management practices. In this study cross sectional survey design was employed. The study was conducted in west Shoa, LibanJawi District. The required data set for the study were gathered primarily through survey method from 178 randomly selected sample households. To collect the required data several methods like interview schedule, focus group discussions and key informant interviews were used. The secondary data were collected from various documents. Descriptive statistics, inferential statistics and econometric model analysis wereemployed to analyze quantitative data.The study revealed that about 41%, 23%, 9%, 11.2%, 6.2%, 2.8%, 2.2% and 4.5% responded as crop rotation with legume, manure use, seed improvement, organic fertilizer, lime, terrace, fallow and soil bund weretype of land management practices they practices respectively. The binary logistic regression model result indicated, seven variables were found to be significant namely distance from home, land holding size, education level, slope of the plot, livestock ownership, land use experiences and extension service showed significant effects on household implementing sustainable land management practices. Governmental and nongovernmental organizations should give emphasis on provision of training to create awareness and skill about benefit gained from household implementing sustainable land management practicestechnologies and also how to increases their implementing sustainable land management practices. Finally, it is recommended that governmental and non-governmental organization should expand access of household implementing sustainable land management practicesby farm households to improve their food security
