Abstract:
This study assessed factors affecting the performance of water supply and sanitation projects in the
Liban Jawi district. The study used both descriptive and explanatory research designs. Mix methods
of research approach meaning that both qualitative and quantitative were used to minimize the
limitations attach to each of the approaches. This study assessed the independent variables of the
WSS project (organizational engagement, contractor capacity, community participation, and
external environment) and the dependent variable timely project completion among which two water
project samples were purposively selected from two kebele, while the researcher distributed 161
questionnaires and collected back 157( 97.5%), out of 12 key informants’ 10(83.3%) were
interviewed and, out of 8 focus group discussion 6 (75%) were discussed from selected stakeholder’s
office. Data was collected through a questionnaire, Focus group discussion, interview of key
informants, and observation of the field. Data analyzed were by descriptive statistics such as
frequency, mean, standard deviation and inferential statistical analysis, and multiple regressions
through using the statistical package for Social Science (SPSS) version 26. The finding of descriptive
results showed that community participation moderately affects timely project completion,
organizational engagement, and contractor capacity, and the external environment highly affects
timely project completion. The finding of the Pearson correlation indicated that a contractor's
capacities were a highly positive relationship with project performance but organizational
engagement, community participation, and external environment were a moderately positive
relationship with project performance. The finding of multiple regression analysis indicated that
contractor capacity, organizational engagement, external environment, and community participation
positively influence project performance from a larger standardized regression coefficient to a lower
standardized regression coefficient respectively. Further, this research paper was trying to show that
project performance would have been influenced by organizational engagement, contractor capacity,
community participation, and external environment in various degrees in the Liban Jawi district.
Based on the finding and the conclusions, it is recommended that Water and Energy sector and
concerned bodies in the Liban Jawi district should approve well activities of the contractor capacity,
organizational engagement, community participation, and external environment for the performance
of the water supply and sanitation project.
