Abstract:
Background: Teacher occupational related stress was defined as that describes the negative psychological emotions that arise from teaching and other work-related responsibilities both within and outside of the classroom. Teaching is a physically and mentally challenging occupational, as the teacher uses a lot of energy in his daily work in the classroom in addition to his personal and familiar commitments, which are continuous source of stress. This study aimed to assess magnitude of occupational related stress among total 330 primary and high school teachers in Dendi woreda.
Objective: To assess the magnitude of occupational related stress and associated factors among primary and high school teachers in Dendi Woreda, Central Oromia, Ethiopia, 2022.
Methods: Institution based cross-sectional study was conducted among 322 primary and high school teachers in woreda who were selected by simple random sampling. Data were collected from September 20 to October 20; 2022 using standardized self-administered questionnaire. Epi–info version 7 was used to enter data and then exported to statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 20 for analyses. Both descriptive and analytical statistic was done and displayed by texts, tables and figures. The association between dependent and independent variables were assessed using bi-variable and multivariate logistic regression analysis based on adjusted odd ratio with 95% CI and at P-value of <0.05.
Results: Magnitude of occupational related stress was found to be 52.8%[95%CI (47.2,58.4)].Male[AOR:0.588;95%CI(0.352,0.982)],diploma[AOR:0.367;95%CI(0.159,0.846)],relationship[AOR:3.722;95%CI(1.753,7.903)],poor social support[AOR:2.790;95% CI(1.028,7.571)],moderate social support[AOR:3.605;95%CI(1.318,9.861)], age 30-39 years [AOR:2.463;95%CI(1.155,5.253)] and age 40-49 years[AOR:2.689;95%CI(1.218,5.937)] were significantly associated with occupational related stress.
Conclusion and recommendation: This study shows presence of significant magnitude of occupational related stress. Sex, education status, relationship, social support and age were associated with occupational related stress. So that; teachers should upgrade their status, increase their relation, increase their social support and as their age increase, they should far from what stress out them.
