Abstract:
Land productivitity have been impacted by many factors and focus of this research was impact of
modern and traditional tillage practice on land productivity. The main objective ofthis study was
to explore the impact of modern and traditional tillage practices on land productivity in western
Shewa zone in Jibat district. The study was mainly focused on describing the land productivity
status between modern and traditional tillage users. Both purposive and stratified sampling
methods were used to collect primary data; secondary data were also collected from relevant
sources.. Four kebeles were purposively selected from each of the selected districts. Analysis
was based on quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative data have been gathered from primary
sources, using semi-structured questionnaire, from 134 by simple random sample selected
households (66 modern tillage users and 68 traditional tillage users). Household surveys and key
informant interviews were conducted for data collection. The simplest way to estimate the effect
of treatment would be to obtain the difference between the outcome of modern tillage users and
traditional tillage users. The study used propensity score matching method to obtain unbaised
estimates. Moreover, descriptive statistics (ANOVA, chi-square, and mean) was also employed
for analysis to achieve the research objectives. The result of the study shows that the mean
value of land productivity were 12.49 quintal per hectare and 10.2 quintal per hectare for modern
and traditional tillage users respectively annually. The results of binary logistic regression
showed that education level, training, income, access to extension services, livestock ownership,
and access to credit were the main significant variables for the adoption of modern tillage
methods. Lack of practical training, low extension services, and low farmer awareness were
some of the identified challenges to use modern tillage practices. Therefore,Government policies
and techniques(Agricultural policies and strategies) that specialize in promoting modern tillage
practice should be implemented to require out the lives of rural societies from th state of income
insecurity and poverty, policy interventions giving priority to the variables mentioned above to
increase adoption of modern tillage practice and keep sustainability of land productivity.
