Background: Hypertension among Diabetes Mellitus is the world health problem. Even though Ethiopia adopted the WHO strategic plan and developed the national NCD strategy, the practice of risk factors continued currently. Therefore measuring the prevalence and identifying predictors of Hypertension is very important.
Objective: The main objective of the study was to assess the magnitude of Hypertension and associated factors among Diabetic patients in Holeta town Health facilities, Oromia, Ethiopia
Methods: A Facility based cross-sectional study was conducted, on a sample of 214 Diabetic patients who were attending Health facilities during Oct-Nov/2022.Sampling method was systematic random sampling. The data were collected through face-to-face interview using pretested structured questionnaire, then checked, coded, and entered into the Epi-data version 3.1 and analyzed by SPSS version 23. Descriptive statistics were made in the form of percentage, means and Standard deviation. Before running logistic regression, Hosmer and Lemeshow goodness of fit test and multi-collinearity checked. In bivariable binary logistic regression analysis, variable with P-Value≤0.25 were candidate for multi-variable binary logistic regression model. Odds ratio with 95% CI was used to measure the strength of association and statistical significance was declared at P.value <0.05.
Result: A total of 214 of Diabetic patients were interviewed and gave the response rate of 97.3%. The overall prevalence of hypertension among Diabetic patients was 54.2% (95%CI: 47.3%, 61%). Multi variable binary logistic regression analysis result indicates that age≥50years(AOR=12.25;95%CI:2.87,52.24),physical-inactivity(AOR=5.23;95%CI: 2.12,12.91),consume alcohol(AOR=5.44;95%CI:1.99,14.87),excess salt consumption (AOR=6.46;95%CI:1.94,21.46), never consume of fruit (AOR=7.76;95%CI:2.94,20.49) and overweight(AOR=5.39;95%CI:1.71,17.05) were found to be significantly associated with hypertension.
Conclusion: The study showed that more than half of diabetic patients suffer from hypertension at Holeta town health facilities. Age ≥50 years, physical inactivity, Current alcohol consumers, excess salt consumers, never fruit consumer and overweight (BMI≥25kg/m2 were significantly associated with hypertension among Diabetic patients. So, early detection and interventions should be an important action among patients with Diabetes |
