Abstract:
Background: The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is the most prevalent pandemic respiratory infectious disease and belongs to large groups of viruses that cause serious health problems worldwide at large scale particularly among Health care providers. However, healthcare providers as the caregivers dealing with infected patients,are more vulnerable to mental health problems. Despite this fact, there is scarce information regarding the COVID-19 related perceived stress among healthcare providers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Objectives: To assess COVID-19-related perceived stress and its associated factors among health care service providers in Eka kotebe and Addis Ababa field hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2022.
Methods: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted among randomly selected 325 healthcare professionals who had direct contact with a patient and serviced in COVID-19 treatment centers. A simple random sampling technique was used to select the study participants. A pretested self -administered structured questionnaire was used as a data collection technique. Data were coded and entered into Epi info version 7 and exported to SPSS version 21 for analysis. Crude and adjusted Odd Ratio were computed using binary logistic regression, and the level of statistical significancy was determined at P value<0.05.
Result: A total of 318 participants were involved into the study which makes the response 97.8%. The study found that the magnitude of covid-19 perceived stress was 66%; 95%CI (60.5-71.2%).Being female [(AOR= 2.87, 95%CI: 1.56, 5.27)] and Working in ward [(AOR= 0.46, 95%CI: 0.22, 0.97)] were significantly associated to covid-19 related perceived stress.
Conclusion: Around two third of healthcare providers working in Addis Ababa Field Hospital and Eka Kotebe Hospital were found to have covid-19 perceived stress. Healthcare providers have faced considerable perceived stress during the pandemic. Being female and working in the ward were found to be associated with covid-19 related perceived stress. Addis Ababa Field Hospital and Eka Kotebe Hospital should, therefore, take proper measures to decrease covid-19 related perceived stress among healthcare providers
