dc.description.abstract Food security program has a crucial role to reduce urban poverty and vulnerability among the urban poor families as well as individuals living below the poverty line. This thesis has attempted to assess the practice and challenges of urban productive safety net program in Addis Ketema sub-city. A descriptive research design is employed in the study. The study was undertaken with total population 3580 and 361 sample beneficiaries were undertaken through simple random sampling technique. To achieve, the objective of the study researcher used both primary and secondary data collection methods. The primary data was collected through a combination of qualitative and quantitative data collection methods involving through questionnaire and semi structured interviews with UPSNP households and key informant interviews. The secondary data was collected through a systematic review of relevant documents and related literature like institution reports, magazines, internet sources, annual plan and PIM&PAD of the program. Data were organized and analyzed and interpreted through using descriptive statistics like, frequency, tables, and percentage. To further improve the performance of the program, it is important to unravel challenges in respect to beneficiaries targeting, credit accessibility, lack of child care center at public work site for beneficiaries, lack of distributed hand tool and safety materials timely and aggregated with beneficiaries, less amount of payment for beneficiaries’ and limitation of Preparing enough work absence of proper public work planning are the main challenge. The study recommends the adjustments of the working day and the amount of cash transfer for beneficiaries based on the current living condition as well as improving the working environment related to the safety materials of the beneficiaries. en_US
