dc.description.abstract Development is widely viewed as an inevitable step towards modernization and economic growth in developing countries and is the main cause for displacement of peoples from their original residences. Even though Burayu town is rapidly expanding; there is limited evidence in relation to the effect of urban sprawl on livelihood of to the surrounding community. Hence, the main objective of this study was to assess the impact of development induced displacement on the socioeconomic status of households in Burayu town. A total of 256 sampled households their land was expropriated for road construction, industrial zone establishments and other. that selected using scientific sample size determination. Satellite image data set was analyzed using Arc View GIS software to Visualize land use land cover (LULC) change exist in the study period (2001 to 2021) and the descriptive analysis was analyzed with the help of SPSS Version 21. The result shows that Burayu town is highly expanding to its peripheral areas within 20 years from 2001 to 2021 to built-up areas by increasing 3358ha; converting farm Land, forest Land grass Land and wetland in which Farm land has the highest share which accounts 2521.26ha. The result noted from the key informant interviews, Focus group discussion (FGD) and Municipality Administration response indicates that the main cause for Burayu Town expansion is its proximity to Addis Ababa and suitability for investment (industrialization) that pulls migrants from different direction. The others min issues are the security problems and the high demand of land for house construction. Due to these and the decrement of their farm land urban peripheral communities annual incomes and their livelihood strategies were changed------. The other main problem encountered to displaced communities‟ were; challenges to adapt to new areas, weakness of social cohesion and open field dumping of solid and liquids wastes. The other finding explored by researcher is Malka atete and Gafarsa Lake is in high risk due to squat settlement around the areas and west draining to the lake. As a conclusion, as one of the key informant says that “unless proper urban planning was applied and all concerning bodies were gives due attention; after a certain years all types of Land uses were converted to built-up areas and the problems were un manageable”. Therefore, it is highly recommended that the government and concerning body need to put attention. en_US
