Abstract:
Background: Induced abortion is defined as the intentional termination of pregnancy using
drugs or surgical interventions before the 28th weeks of gestation or before the fetus become
independently viable outside of the womb. World health organization (WHO) estimated 42
million induced abortions annually, and result in the deaths of an estimated 47,000 women.
Objective: To determine the magnitude of induced abortion and associated factors among
women undergone abortion care in woliso town health institutions, Oromia, Ethiopia, 2022.
Methods and materials: Facility-based cross sectional study design complemented by
qualitative study was conducted from Sep.1/2022 to Oct.30/2022. A total of 363 women
who undergone abortions were selected by SRS from 8 health institutions in Woliso town.
The data was collected by face-to-face interview using a structured questionnaire. Ten
purposely selected women undergone abortions care were included for in-depth interview.
Data were entered using epi info version 7.1 and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Data
analysis was done using descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression model. 95%
confidence intervals (CI) with adjusted odds ratios (AOR) computed to identify the presence
and strength of association. Statistical significance was declared at p-value < 0.05 along with
95% CI of the AOR. Qualitative data was initially transcribed and translated into English
transcripts, then triangulated and presented in narration.
Results: A total of 363 women of reproductive age were invited to participate and 357 of
them responded making 98.3% response rate. The overall magnitude of induced abortion
among women involved in the study was 65.0 % (CI: 60.2%, 70.0%). Being in the age of 15-
19 years (AOR=5.03, 95%CI: 1.29,19.68), urban residence (AOR=2.58, 95%CI: 1.40, 4.74),
being single (AOR=5.96, 95%CI: 1.72, 20.63),having previous history of abortion
(AOR=3.26, 95%CI: 1.77, 6.02), having multiple sexual partners (AOR= 2.70, 95%CI: 1.18,
6.17) and not having family or partner support to have child (AOR=4.05, 95%CI: 2.13, 7.71)
were factors that were significantly associated with induced abortion. For in-depth
interviews, ten women were participated from health facilities providing abortion care.
Conclusion and recommendation: The magnitude of induced abortion in the study area was
relatively high. The factors that were significantly associated with induced abortion were:
being in the age of 15-19 years, urban residence, single marital status, having previous
history of abortion, having multiple sexual partners and not having family or partner support
to have child. Therefore, it is better to give attention for Youngers and those having multiple
sexual partners, then strengthening of male involvement in provision of reproductive
healthcare services are crucial.
