Abstract:
Background- Termination of breast feeding prior to two years is the act of interrupting giving breast milk and making the child accustomed to other food before the child reach the age of two years. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommended that continuation of breastfeeding along with adequate complementary foods for two years or beyond.
Objectives- To assess the prevalence of breast feeding termination prior to two years and associated factors among mothers of children aged 24 to 36 months in Burayu town, Oromia, Ethiopia, 2022.
Methods- Community based cross sectional study was conducted from April 1 to April 30, 2022 among mothers of children aged 24 to 36 months in Burayu town, Oromia, Ethiopia. A total of 506 study participants were selected by simple random sampling technique and face to face interview was implemented using semi structured and structured questionnaire to collect data. Binary logistic regression model was used to analysis data .Adjusted odds ratio with 95% confidence intervals was computed to identify the presence and strength of association, and statistical significance was declared at p < 0.05.
Result- The prevalence of breast feeding termination prior to two years was 44.1% [95% CI (39.5, 48.0)]. Maternal age group 18-23 years (AOR=18.062 95% 8.839, 36.909), maternal age group 24-29 years (AOR=4.329, 95% CI 2.415,7.759), Mothers with non-formal education (AOR=0.288, 95% CI0.103, 0.803), House wife mothers (AOR=0.130, 95% C I 0.073,0.229), mothers those who were not followed ANC follow up (AOR=6.952 95% CI 1.882,25.671) and mothers those who were not followed PNC follow up (AOR=1.992 95% CI 1.126,3.576) were significantly associated with time to termination of breastfeeding prior to two years at 95% confidence level (p <0.05).
Conclusion -The prevalence of termination of breast feeding prior to two years was higher than the prevalence of study done in the other area. Therefore, the concerned body should help mothers to breast feed their infant for at least two years after delivery and health professionals should encourage mothers to follow ANC visit and PNC follow up to decrease termination of breast feeding prior two years
