Abstract:
Back ground: The health care services that a woman receives during the continuum of maternal
health care i.e. during pregnancy, childbirth, and postnatal period are important for the survival
and well-being of both the mother and the baby. Regardless of its importance, in Ethiopia the
coverage of continuum of maternity care is low. This makes pregnancy related problems to be
undiagnosed and not treated early putting the life of mother, fetus and newborn in danger.
Objective: To assess completion status of maternity continuum of care and associated factors
among mothers who gave birth in the last one year in Burayu Town, Ethiopia, 2022
Method and materials: Community based cross sectional study was conducted from May 1-30,
2022. Total -sample size for this study was 635 women who gave birth in the last one year prior
to the study in Burayu town and simple random sampling method were used to select study subject.
Data was collected using interviewer administered structured questionnaire. The data was coded
manually and entered using Epi-info version 7 software. The data was analyzed using SPSS
version 25.0 software and results were presented using tables and graphs. Binary logistic
regression was used to identify predictors of completion status of the maternity continuum of care.
Variables with a P value < 0.05 at 95% CI in multiple logistic regressions analysis were declared
as statistically significant associated factors.
Result: Totally 611 mother participated in the study making 96.2% response rate. This study
revealed that 47.8% (95% CI: 43.82%, 51.76%) of respondents completed the continuum of care.
Collage and above educational status of women’s (AOR=3.0 95% CI= 1.17, 7.7), mother got
advice during antenatal care (AOR= 3.47 95% CI= 1.17, 10.34), wanted pregnancy (AOR= 3.35
95%CI= 1.47, 7.65), starting ANC follow up within first trimester (AOR=2.29 95% CI= 1.48,
3.58) and women encounter pregnancy related complication during any of her pregnancy
(AOR=2.28 95% CI= 1.45, 3.58) are factors that have association with completion status of
maternity continuum of care.
Conclusion and Recommendations: The prevalence of completion status of maternity continuum
of care was low (47.8%) in the study area. Thus, efforts to improve the completion of care should
focus on health promotion activities to enhance early initiation of antenatal care and preventing
unwanted pregnancy. Mothers should also get good advice during ANC follow up
