The purpose of this study was to assess the teachers’ perception of implementing of continuous assessment in some selected secondary school of HoroGuduru Wollega Zone 0f Oromia regional state .The study was descriptive survey research,research paradigmand sampling techniques. The subjects in this study were 218 teachersfor questioner and,8 cluster supervisors and 8 directors for interview. Data were collected through questionnaire, interview and document analysis. Percentage, mean and standard deviation were used as the main method of analysis even though quantitative data were analyzed quantitatively. The results indicated that most of the teachers did not include a variety of continuous assessment tools in their plan and did not use in the classroom activities regularly and also they record students results at one session i.e., at end of each month and semester. Furthermore, some of school teachers have used continuous assessment to identify students’ learning difficulties and learning interests while others have used it to assign mark to students’ learning achievement. Thus, there is discrepancy between the perceived purpose of continuous assessment and what the teachers have used for. It is also difficult to get well handled documents and properly kept assessment records of the students, and the system of reporting learners’ achievement for their parents’ regularly with appropriate detail is completely weak. the study recommends that the school should fulfill enough assessment guide lines so as to increase the understanding of teachers and principals. The presence of these manuals in the school will contribute for proper awareness and practice of CA in HoroGuduru Wollega Zone Secondary School.Continuous assessment has not fully implemented because of the following major challenges lack of awareness, lack of learning materials, job burden, lack of time, large class size and students readiness To overcome these challenges, generally it is recruit additional teachers to reduce workload, making stakeholders aware, fulfilling teaching and learning materials, reduction of the class size, increase motivation of readiness of students, additional training, increase of achievement of students, school facilities, Students‟ increase positive the perception about the use of CA, and adequacy of materials should be given prior attention |
