Abstract:
Background: Work related stress is one of the health problems that have to be deal with it. Its
non-specific response of the body to any demand change and it have potential effect on the
organization and health professionals as well which would affect the quality of care which
further results in increased mortality among patients, and patient dissatisfaction. However, in the
study area little has been addressed on work related stress and factors associate with it.
Objective: To assess work-related stress and associated factors among health professionals
working in Ambo town governmental health facilities.
Methods: Institution-based cross-sectional study design was conducted in Ambo town from
July; 15/2021-August,15/2021.Simple random sampling technique was used to select 407 health
professionals working in Ambo town governmental health facilities. Data were collected by
using structured self-administered questionnaire and entered into Epi-data 4.6and analyzed using
SPSS version 25 software. Descriptive statistics was used to show the magnitude of work-related
stress. Multivariate binary logistic regression was employed to identify variable that are
significantly associated with work-related stress at 95% CI and P-value <0.05.
Result: A total of health professionals were participated in the study 407 making response rate
of 96.9% and among of them 261 (64.1%) were males and 146(46.9%) were females. The
magnitude of work -related stress was 213(52.33%), 95%CI(0.475, 0.572).Being female
[AOR=1.73,[95%CI=1.06,2.81]],home-work interface [AOR=1.93,[95% CI=1.19,3.14]],job
insecurity (tendency not knowing continue current job [AOR=3.22,[95%CI=1.87,5.56)]] and
major life events (serious injury to close relatives [AOR=3.13,[95%CI=1.68,5.84)]],death of
close relative [AOR=2.09,[95%CI=1.16,3.77]],being violated by other [AOR=3.10,
[95%CI=1.65,5.83)]] and anything else seriously upset[AOR=2.63,[95% CI=1.60,4.32]]) were
factors significantly associated with work-related stress.
Conclusion: More than half of the health professionals have work-related stress and sex,
working condition and life events induces stress at their work. So introduction of interventions
supporting health care professional’s well-being at work and tackling factors that induce work
related stress is advisable.
