Abstract:
Background: Work-related lower back pain is one of the commonest musculoskeletal disorders affecting all
age groups including adults in their work place globally. Bank workers are among the group of population
commonly exposed to lower back pain due to their work style. There is limited information on the
prevalence and associated factors that leads to work- related lower back pain among bank workers.
Therefore, conducting the research on the topic has paramount importance to propose further
interventions.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of work- related Lower Back Pain and
associated factors among bank workers in Oromia special zone.
Methods: Institution-based cross sectional study was conducted in Oromia special zone from September
1/2021 to October 30/2021. Simple random sampling was used to select five banks that found in selected
towns and districts. A total of 418 bank workers were involved in the study by simple randomly
Sampling. Self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Data were entered in epi-data version
7, analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science version 23, and presented by frequencies,
percentages, and tables. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify the association between
dependent and each independent variable considering 95% CI using crude odds ratio and cross tabulation.
Variables with p-value of 0.25 and less in the binary logistic regression were taken to multivariable
Logistic model. In multivariable analysis, variables with p-value less than 0.05 were declared as
statistically significant.
Result: The 12-month prevalence of work related lower back pain was found to be 58.4 %. In the
multivariable analysis respondents working by sitting back twist position(AOR=12.9 ,95%CI=2.57-
25,p=0.002),sitting on fixed chair (AOR=15.9; 95%C 7.18-32.4, p=<0.001), working on computer on
fixed position(AOR= 3.02; 95% CI (1.24- 7.34,p=0.014) , doing repetitive work in less than 30
seconds(AOR=3.4 ,95%CI=1.6-7.31,p=0.001) and experience of trainings on occupational safety and
hygiene (AOR=0.28<95 %CI =0.11-0.67,P=<0.001), having positive association with work related lower
back pain needing reaction.
Conclusion and recommendation: This study shows that there is a high prevalence of work related lower
back pain among bank workers. Factors like sitting on fixed chair, working computer put in fixed
position, work load and doing repetitive work in less than 30 seconds and trainings on occupational safety
and hygiene ,were the most contributing factories increasing work related lower back pain .Therefore, it is
recommended that proper ergonomics to avoid working in fixed chair, working computer put in fixed
position and to reduce working repetitive work sitting on one position for long time work place
modification such as rotation policy among the workers is recommended to reduce lower back pain
