Abstract:
Introduction: Implanon is small plastic rods, each about the size of a matchstick, that release a progestin like the natural hormone progesterone in a woman’s body. Early Implanon discontinuation contributes to unwanted pregnancies and induced abortions. Worldwide, more than 41% of the 208 million preg¬nancies that occur each year are unplanned. In Southern Ethiopia, the magnitude of Implanon discontinuation was 38%.
Objective: To assess early implanon discontinuation proportion and its associated factors among women who used implanon in Waliso District, South West Shewa Zone, Oromia, Ethiopia, 2022.
Methods: A Community based cross-sectional study was conducted from November 01 to 30/2021. Simple random sampling technique was used to select a total of 388 women from sample frame that was proportionally allocated to kebeles. A structured interviewer administered questionnaire was used to elicit all important variables for the study. The data were entered by using Epi Info version 7 and were exported to statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 21.0 for analysis. Both descriptive and analytical statistical analyses were done. Bivariable analysis was computed to select the candidate variables for multi-variable analysis at P≤0.25 variables with p-value < 0.05 in the multivariable logistic regression analysis was considered associated for early implanon discontinuation. Finally, adjusted odds ratios (AOR) and its corresponding 95% confidence interval was used to show the strength of association and the result was displayed using charts, graphs and tables.
Result: The proportion of early implanon discontinuation was 89.2 %( 95% CI=85.8-92.0). Age >=35 (AOR= 9.6 [95% CI: 1.12, 83], feel side effect (AOR=31.6 [95% CI: 1.14, 876], abortion history (AOR=4.0 [95% CI: 1.35, 11.90] and women occupation (AOR=0.15 [95% CI: 0.04, 0.54] were significantly associated with early implanon discontinuation.
Conclusion: The proportion of early implanon discontinuation in this study was high. Hence effective counselling on advantage and side effects of implanon and proper management of side effects should be made to increase implanon retention
