Abstract:
Background: Completion of four ANC visit improves pregnancy outcome and
minimizes the chance of having pregnancy and birth related complications. Completion
of ANC4+ was 12% in 2005,19% in 2011, 32% in 2016 and 43% in 2019 in Ethiopia.
Objective: To assess the magnitude of completion of four antenatal care visits and
associated factors among mothers having infants less than two months of age in public
health facilities, wolisso town, central Ethiopia, 2021.
Method: A facility based cross-sectional study was conducted using consecutive sampling
among 325 mothers of infants less than two months of age who came to two health centers
from November22, 2021 to January 22, 2022. The data were collected using pre-tested and
structured questionnaire through face to face interview. Data entry and analysis were made
using EPI info version 7 software and SPSS version 20. Association between dependent and
independent variables was tested in bivariate and multivariate binary logistic regression
model and variables with p-value ≤ 0.25 were entered once stepwise forward in to
multivariate logistic regression. Summary result was presented using frequency table and
cross- tabulation. Statistical significance was declared at P-value ≤ 0.05 in multivariate
logistic regression. Adjusted odds ratio with corresponding 95% CI was used for the
interpretation purpose.
Result: A total of 325 participants were enrolled into this study giving a response rate of
100%. One hundred ninety (58.5%, 95% CI: 53.2, 64) had completed their ANC4 visit.
Educational status being college and university education (AOR=6.`122, 95% CI:
2.25,16.66), secondary education (AOR=2.529, 95% CI :(1.06, 6.03), initiation time within
the first three months of pregnancy (AOR-6.802, 95% CI:3.54,13.07), having awareness
about ANC service (AOR=5.464, 95% CI: 2.37,12.58) and hospital visit for ANC service
(AOR= 1.879, 95% CI:1.03,3.44) were statistically associated with completion of ANC4.
Conclusion: This study revealed that ANC four completion is higher in the study area than
National and local findings. Improved educational level, initiation of ANC service in the first
three months of pregnancy, having knowledge on ANC service and getting service at Hospital
had positive statistical association with completion of four antenatal care service.
Recommendation: motivating women to learn up to higher level, increasing awareness on
benefits antenatal care and starting ANC service early in the first trimester of pregnancy are
recommended to help the mothers to complete their ANC4+ service.
