Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to investigate the factors and magnitude of wastage in three secondary schools of Burayu city administration. Quantitative research approach and descriptive survey research design was employed. Using purposive and simple random sampling techniques, three secondary schools, 10 parents, 6 principals, 66 teachers and 150 students were included. Two survey instruments questionnaire and interview were used to collect data, which was entered into SPSS v Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage and mean were used to analyze data. The finding of the study showed that the dropout rate was fluctuating from year to year in the study area. The grade level which was more affected by educational wastage of dropout, the result shows that, an increasing from grade nine to twelve. School dropout rate reveals an increasing trend in five academic years and address similar trend like City administration and the regional reports. The factors stated in the study reveal that as major factors for student drop out were: health problem or sickness and economic reasons as a special case. The data showed that a fluctuation trend, repetition rate had been severing in grade 9.The finding also shows that ten factors found to be as moderating causing students repetition rate. One of the most mechanisms to overcome educational wastes was School facilities made better & available. It is better if city administration education offices and schools make systematic public information organized on a permanent base to give parents an awareness of the importance of their children’s attending school. It is recommended that the teachers and principals give due attention to minimize education waste in grade nine and also give due attention for girls students
