Abstract:
There are different causes of gender inequality as the concept of gender is widened issues. The 
purpose of this study is to identify the causes and effects of gender inequality and exploring 
current interventions to address gender equality in public sector as respondent’s perception in 
Liban Jawi woreda. The study employed the mixed research method for comprehensive and 
better understanding. The target population for this study was 135 out of 397 employees. The 
study area selected by purposively because it’s inhabitant of the researcher and unavailability of 
previously conducted researches that related with gender inequality. The sectors also selected as 
purposively on women sectors manager, have gender mainstreaming focal person or structure, 
sectors those governments focuses as working on poverty reduction sector. The respondents from 
the selected sectors were selected by probability sampling as proportion of the employees. The 
instruments used to gather primary data questionnaires; key informant interview, focus group 
discussion and personal observation were prepared and used whereas for secondary data 
different related research, books and internet were used. Descriptive statistics such as 
percentage table and different graphs were employed for data analysis. The SPSS version 20 for 
window is used. Based on The data analysis the following findings were recorded according to 
respondents perceived. The causes of gender inequality were interconnected with social, 
psychological, organizational and economical causes. The chi-square also indicated that all 
social, organizational, psychological and economical causes as a causes of gender inequality in 
public sector. Those are existences of traditional attitude, lack of information for women in 
decision making, lack of opportunity for women in decision making, double burden for the 
women in the house, lack of policy to support women, lack of accessible training facility on 
gender issue, lack of gender mainstreaming professionals in public sector, absences of male 
participation for women empowerment, fearing of women to speech on their right and biological 
or natural difference which respondents perceived and lack of finances for education and giving 
train. The effects of gender inequality were loss of human power, increase gender based 
discrimination and violence, high women dependency, constraints the organization to achieve its 
desired goal, participation of women in low position, loss of women participation in 
management and decision making, increase feminization of poverty. Achieving gender equality 
and eradicating gender inequality in the study were needs many works. To minimize these 
problems the following solutions are recommended; facilitating or arrange the trainings to 
aware the employees on gender equality, employee the gender mainstreaming professionals in 
public sectors, create cooperation between women’s and creating women’s association in public 
sector and inviting nongovernmental organization those working on gender equality.
