Abstract:
Background:-Good attitude on collaborative care between nurses and physicians is crucial
for better team working. Collaboration among nurse and physicians has been considered a
promising strategy for improving care quality and patient outcomes. Despite mounting
evidence demonstrating the impact of collaboration on outcomes of healthcare providers, there
is little empirical evidence on the collaboration, particularly at the patient care unit level.
Objectives
To assess the level of attitudes of nurses and physicians towards nurse-physician collaboration
and the associated factors at selected hospitals of west shewa, Ethiopia.
Methods: An institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted among 171 nurses and
34 physicians working west shewa zone public hospitals From July 25 to August 25, 2021.
Data Analysis:-Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires. Attitudes
of nurses and physicians were measured using Jefferson scale of attitudes towards
nurse-physician Collaboration. The data was interred in software called Epi Info
Version 7.2 and then transferred to SPSS version 20.and then data was analyzed by
using descriptive statistics including frequencies, mean and standard deviation.
Pearson correlation(R) as used to identify Associated factors and p value <0.05 was
considered as significant.
Results
Nurses expressed more positives attitudes toward collaboration than physicians (55.8)
comparing to physicians' scores (43.42).Nurses showed more positive attitudes towards
collaboration than physicians within 13 items. While physicians showed more positive attitude
than nurses within two items only There was statistical significant positive correlation between
years of experience and shared education and teamwork (R = 0.916*, p=0.0412).
Conclusion and recommendation
This study showed that nurses showed more positive attitudes towards collaboration than
physicians within 13 items. While physicians showed more positive attitude than nurses within
two items only. Since Attitude change will have the problems on the patient care,It is the role of
educators,health institution and hospital adminsrator to create aweraness and educate the benefits
of collaboration and team work among nurses and physicians.
